Project Overview
This collection of stamps was designed for a class symbol set project for families around the world celebrating Día de Muertos. Each of these stamps consists of a unique artifact commonly found at a Día de Muertos altar or “ofrenda” and together act as a testament to the holiday’s warm and vibrant atmosphere.
I was raised in a Mexican-American household and since around the age of five, I have celebrated the occasion with my family by constructing an ofrenda and preparing food and drink for our loved ones who passed away.
Takeaways
As someone who attended a bilingual elementary school, living with my Mexican stepdad made learning the language twice as fast as the other kids while also being raised with classic Mexican TV shows, music, and traditions. Among the Mexican holidays we celebrated, Día de Muertos always felt the most special to me. This project gave me the opportunity to embrace the other side of my identity which is not immediately obvious by looking at me while also giving me a strong understanding of symbol design and the opportunity to explore with motion.
